Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY 5:03 a.m. TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMORESAN DIEGO — Honda is about to unleash a new, more upscale version of its smallest and cheapest car, the Fit, with hopes it could be the Mighty Mouse here to save the day. The new generation redesign for 2015 of the subcompact introduced in the U.S. in 2006 has a more sophisticated, rakish appearance, like a college grad who transitions from beer bashes to Starbucks lattes. That could broaden Fit's appeal to include more empty-nest Boomers and everyday commuters, beyond younger buyers looking for something cheap to buy and drive. It goes on sale in the U.S. next week at a time when Honda's sales here could use a boost. Honda was one of only two brands (Hyundai was the other) that saw sales declines last month when the auto industry as a whole saw a 5.7% boost over the same month last year, Autodata reports. Though Honda sales fell 2%, the brand's strength is focused around four perennially strong-selling models — the Civic and Accord sedans, CR-V crossover and Odyssey minivan. A reinvigorated Fit could add a fifth hot seller to the mix: Sales of the close-out 2014 Fit were down 10% for the first quarter to 10,344. It also could be a profit booster — the new version no longer will be built in Japan, but in North America on a new line built in Mexico. Fit, sold as the Jazz in some markets, is a world product for Honda. •Growing segment. Subcompact sales are expected to rise 3.6% through 2019, twice the rate of overall car sales, according to Global Insight. •Higher-income buyers. While the median age of its buyer is about the same as the rest of its segment, 48, Fit attracts buyers with a higher household income than such true subcompact rivals such as Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Sonic. •College grads. Some 64% of Fit buyers are college graduates, also highest in the segment, according to Power Information Network data. •Stronger resale values. Fits have held their value better than rivals. Example: A 2013 Fit is expected to worth about 55% of its original price after three years, 5 percentage points better than the average in its segment, says TrueCar.com's ALG unit, which predicts resale values. Yet Honda plans to raise the base price of the new Fit by just $100, to $15,525 plus delivery charges. More than half of buyers are expected to opt for a plusher EX version with a sunroof and other touches that is priced, with a continuously variable (CVT) automatic, at $18,235, up $225 from the outgoing version. The new Fit comes billed as smaller on the outside but roomier on the inside. "It takes you out of the penalty box of small cars," said Honda spokesman Sage Marie at a U.S. press introduction of the car in San Diego. Fuel economy, already a strength, has improved in an engine that picks up a few horsepower. Features have been added based on customer feedback, such as the sunroof on what is expected to be the most popular version. Some of the Fit's quirky touches, like the big knobs and a handy tray on the dashboard, are gone. But the Fit still has plenty of glass, giving it good visibility, one of its standout features. The car also now has a standard rear-view camera and improved infotainment touch-screen system. And one of its signature features carries on into the 2015: A rear seat cushion that folds up — creating a door-to-door and roof-to-floor cargo space — in addition to a traditional rear seat back that folds down. The space allows a bike to be stored lengthwise, or it can handle a tall potted plant. The wheelbase has been stretched by slightly more than an inch, although the overall length of the Fit shrinks 1.6 inches. It's a tad wider, too. The gas tank under the driver's seat was redesigned to fit flatter, and the radiator is slimmer, creating more passenger space. Most of the added space goes into the rear seat, where legroom is enhanced by 4.8 inches. Just like the outgoing Fit, the short hatchback is easy to park. The four-cylinder engine now puts out 130 horsepower, an 11% improvement. The automatic transmission has been replaced by a CVT which helps boost the combined mileage rating 5 miles per gallon to 36 — the city rating is 33 miles and highway is 41. For the 15% of buyers who take the six-speed manual transmission (up from five), the ratings are 29, 37 highway and 32 combined, up 5 mpg. Make Ex. Wayne, N.Y. » Social NewsNEWARK — The Newark school board is expected to approve a budget by month’s end that will include as much as a 3.29 percent tax levy increase on paper. However, the state’s new rebate program could negate any impact on district tax bills. Superintendent Matt Cook and Assistant Superintendent for Business Ed Gnau presented an official first draft of the 2014-15 budget with their recommendations to the school board last Wednesday night, April 2. The $46, 049,065 spending plan is up nearly $4 million over last year. Gnau said the increase reflects rises in the debt service of 11 percent, benefits, including health insurance, is up over 8 percent and costs for BOCES services due to an increased number new students needing special services are up 25 percent. Cook said the recent push by local school districts may not have resulted in an end to the gap elimination adjustment, state aid funding taken from school districts to balance the state’s budget, but the state did provide more aid. Cook said another $800,000 in state aid was restored, although the district was still shorted an additional $500,000 due to the GEA. State aid to Newark this year totals $28,890,021, up 5.4 percent over last year. The district could raise taxes as much as 3.29 percent and stay within the tax cap, but Cook and Gnau are recommending a 2 percent tax levy increase that would raise the tax rate 42 cents, from $20.53 to $20.95 per $1,000 of assessed value. “We’re going to recommend to you to hit reserves a little harder than we have in the past,” Cook said. “Reserves are used for a rainy day, and it’s raining. The district has $8 million in reserves and is recommending using $1,990,000 in combination with some cuts and a 2 percent tax levy increase to fill the gap. Cuts include two part-time long-term substitutes and reduced supplies for athletics and at building level. It was also suggested the district open a new special-education program called Social Skills Helping All Pupils Excel (SHAPE) at Lincoln School, which would reduce the number of students going to BOCES for special services and save the district $200,000. Cook said the new class also has the potential to create revenue by accepting students from other districts. “This is an extremely aggressive approach,” Gnau said of their recommendation. “We can’t use reserves like this again. However, the school board has another option to consider. Cook said board members could raise the tax levy as much as 3.29 percent, reducing the amount pulled from reserves. The board’s primary concern expressed at the meeting is the impact such a large increase will have on taxpayers. But Cook said he believes there will be no impact. Under the new tax cap rebate program, as long as the town, village and school district all remain at or below the tax cap, the state will reimburse taxpayers however much their taxes go up, Cook said. He and Gnau are researching the matter in depth to confirm their understanding of the program and will advise the board at its next meeting tonight, Wednesday, April 9. If their interpretation of the program is correct, the board agreed that this second option “would be the best bang for our buck” by getting the most out of the state without hurting local taxpayers. Based on these trends, Darnell Group has identified the current "best" markets for digital power. Some have emerged from the slow-but-inevitable march toward a "Smart Grid"; others come from standards and the demand for increased energy efficiency. The further adoption of digital power technology to smart grid and other energy measurement/management applications presents a host of opportunities. In fact, these applications face implementation challenges that are both business- and technology-related. For example, digital control of power allows reductions of power consumption of the installed equipment base and, at the same time, offers telemetry and the ability to monitor, control and alert to tampering and energy theft, and respond to tampering in various ways. As a result, robust telemetry, monitoring and anti-tampering capabilities, along with securing the grid, are all critical. However, due to the sheer size of overall of the external ac-dc power supply market it is an attractive opportunity for digital power supply manufacturers and will result in the largest unit market over the forecast period. Drivers for digitally controlled external ac-dc power supplies are coming primarily from standards and regulations mandating stricter power supply requirements. With the emphasis on increased energy efficiency, manufacturers have the flexibility to offer power adapters that can communicate changes in power requirements, such as higher or lower voltage, or to shut off completely when not in use. Digital power management and control has also made substantial progress in embedded ac-dc power supplies over the past several years, especially in the area of solid-state lighting. Early digital products were focused primarily in the area of semiconductors, however, the technology has evolved and more companies are now actively introducing power supply products that incorporate digital power management and control solutions. Digital power is also more efficient in applications featuring PFC and in applications that require voltage and current profiling which are better implemented in digital rather than analog. Contralto Marian Anderson sang at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, April 9, 1939 to a estimated crowd of 75,000. (University of Pennsylvania)Seventy-five years ago, on April 9, 1939, as Hitler's troops advanced in Europe and the Depression took its toll in the U.S., one of the most important musical events of the 20th century took place on the National Mall in Washington. There, just two performers, a singer and a pianist, made musical — and social — history. At 42, contralto Marian Anderson was famous in Europe and the U.S., but had never faced such an enormous crowd. There were 75,000 people in the audience that day, and she was terrified. Later, she wrote: "I could not run away from this situation. If I had anything to offer, I would have to do so now. So, in the chilly April dusk, Anderson stepped onto a stage built over the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and began to sing "My Country, 'Tis of Thee." Her first notes show no sign of nerves. Her voice is forceful and sweet. And the choice of music — that opening song — is remarkable, given the circumstances. The NBC Blue Network announcer explained the unusual venue this way: "Marian Anderson is singing this public concert at the Lincoln Memorial because she was unable to get an auditorium to accommodate the tremendous audience that wishes to hear her. That was hardly the story. According to Anderson biographer Allan Keiler, she was invited to sing in Washington by Howard University as part of its concert series. And because of Anderson's international reputation, the university needed to find a place large enough to accommodate the crowds. Constitution Hall was such a place, but the Daughters of the American Revolution owned the hall. "They refused to allow her use of the hall," Keiler says, "because she was black and because there was a white artist-only clause printed in every contract issued by the DAR. I could not run away from this situation. If I had anything to offer, I would have to do so now. Marian AndersonLike the nation's capital, Constitution Hall was segregated then. Black audiences could sit in a small section of the balcony, and did, when a few black performers appeared in earlier years. But after one such singer refused to perform in a segregated auditorium, the DAR ruled that only whites could appear on their stage. One of the members of the DAR was first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Outraged by the decision, Roosevelt sent a letter of resignation and wrote about it in her weekly column, "My Day." "They have taken an action which has been widely criticized in the press," she wrote. "To remain as a member implies approval of that action, and therefore I am resigning. The DAR did not relent. According to Keiler, the idea to sing outdoors came from Walter White, then executive secretary of the NAACP. Since the Lincoln Memorial was a national monument, the logistics for the day fell to Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes. It was Ickes who led Anderson onto the stage on April 9, 1939. She began with "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" — also known as "America" — a deeply patriotic song. When she got to the third line of that well-known tune, she made a change. Instead of "of thee I sing" she sang "to thee we sing. A quiet, humble person, Anderson often used "we" when speaking about herself. Years after the concert, she explained why: "We cannot live alone," she said. "And the thing that made this moment possible for you and for me, has been brought about by many people whom we will never know. But her change of lyric — from "I" to "we" can be heard as an embrace — implying community and group responsibility. Never a civil rights activist, Anderson believed prejudice would disappear if she performed and behaved with dignity. But dignity came at a price throughout her 25-minute Lincoln Memorial concert. Biographer Keller says she appeared frightened before every song, yet the perfect notes kept coming. "I think it was because she was able to close her eyes and shut out what she saw in front of her," Keiler says. "And simply the music took over. After "America," she sang an aria from La favorite by Gaetano Donizetti, then Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria." She ended the concert with three spirituals, "Gospel Train," "Trampin'" and "My Soul is Anchored in the Lord. On that stage, before a bank of microphones, the Lincoln statue looming behind her, iconic photographs reveal Anderson as a regal figure that cloudy, blustery day. Although the sun broke out as she began to sing, she wrapped her fur coat around her against the April wind. Anderson's mink coat is preserved at the Anacostia Community Museum in Washington. It's kept in a large archival box in cold storage and stuffed with acid-free tissue to preserve its shape. The lining of the coat is embroidered with gold threads in a paisley pattern, and the initials M A are monogrammed inside. Whether wrapped in that coat or gowned for a concert hall, Anderson, Museum historian Gail Lowe says, touched everyone who heard her: "Her voice was a very rich contralto and so those kind of low notes ... can resonate and match one's heartbeat. Conductor Arturo Toscanini said a voice like Anderson's "comes around once in a hundred years. When Ickes introduced Anderson, he told the desegregated crowd that stretched all the way from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, "In this great auditorium under the sky, all of us are free. Genius, like justice, is blind. Genius draws no color lines. And genius had touched Marian Anderson. Anderson inspired generations and continues to do so. An anniversary concert will take place at Constitution Hall, which denied Anderson 75 years ago. A few featured performers are Jessye Norman, Dionne Warwick, American Idol winner Candice Glover, bass Soloman Howard and soprano Alyson Cambridge. Cambridge first heard about Anderson while a young music student in Washington. "They said she was the first African-American to sing at the Met," Cambridge says. At 12 years old, Cambridge was just beginning voice lessons but she knew that New York's Metropolitan Opera was it for an opera singer. These days, Cambridge finds she has to explain the great singer to others. "Some people sort of look at me with a raised eyebrow — 'Who's Marian Anderson?'" Cambridge says. And she continues, "She really broke down the barriers for all African-American artists and performers. The Lincoln Memorial concert made Anderson an international celebrity. It overshadowed the rest of her long life as a performer — she was 96 when she died in 1993. Eventually she did sing at Constitution Hall. By that time, the DAR had apologized and changed its rules. Anderson rarely spoke of that historic April day, and Keiler says when she did, there was no rancor.
